Here is some information on the types of barcodes used in South Africa

South African Barcode Numbers

EAN-13 barcodes are the most common type of barcodes used in South Africa. These are used on all products except for books and magazines. You may also decide to use UPC-A barcodes. However, these are far more common in the USA and Canada; hence, we recommend using these only if you are selling predominantly in the USA and Canada.

South African Retailer Barcode Requirements

As far as we know, there are no barcode restrictions on our barcodes in South Africa. Internationally, however, there are some issues with larger retail chains. Please see barcode acceptance for more details.
